New Zealand’s economy is set to benefit from deep learning technology, that will enable a User-Friendly Deep Learning. A funded project is being carried out to help facilitate technological solutions. The study is taking place at the University of Waikato.

The project will span over 3 years, following a Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) Endeavour Fund grant of NZ$1 million. It will focus on User-Friendly Deep Learning research project and will be managed by computer science experts. Several commercial applications could then make use of the research carried out that would lead to a complex machine-learning technology.

One of the progressing industries currently, Artificial Intelligence (AI), is closely linked to machine learning.

Furthermore, such technology would be useful to work with economic, environmental, and social groups and organisations that would need accurate decision-making that is built on reliable information that include correlated variables. New Zealand has not been in the forefront of the industry, due to a lack of expertise.
Small and medium businesses would be able to gain from this study – an investment only possible because of funding to get the needed people for development.

The plan is to create a system that is open to anyone in need of a prototype solution.

The team at the University of Waikato will be testing responses on early prototypes.
